Eaglesoft Hardware Requirements in 2026: What To Know

If your Eaglesoft is running slow, crashing, or acting up after a recent update, hardware is usually the first place to look. Here are the official 2026 system requirements from Patterson Dental, plus what they mean for your practice in plain language.

For offices with 10 or more workstations, Patterson recommends stepping up to a dedicated Windows Server OS and higher-spec hardware. Speak with your dental IT provider before purchasing if you are at or near that threshold.

What These Specs Mean for Your Practice

16 GB RAM on the server is the standard

Running Eaglesoft on a server with less than 16 GB of RAM, especially with imaging software like Patterson Imaging or Schick sensors in use, will cause noticeable slowdowns. If your server is at 8 GB, upgrading to 16 GB is one of the fastest performance improvements available.

Storage matters more than most practices realize

Patterson’s official spec calls for a 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive with RAID Level 1. RAID 1 mirrors your data across two drives so that if one fails, you do not lose everything. If your server is running a single drive without RAID, that is a data risk worth addressing. SSD upgrades are not officially listed as a requirement but will improve read and write performance significantly.

Wired ethernet in every operatory

Eaglesoft does not support wireless connections on the server, and Patterson’s guidelines make clear that wired is the right choice for workstations too. Dental imaging files are large. Any wireless lag gets blamed on Eaglesoft when the real issue is the network.

Windows 10 is still supported for workstations

Unlike Dentrix, Eaglesoft has not announced a hard cutoff for Windows 10 workstation support as of this writing. However, Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 in October 2025, which means no more security patches. Any new workstation purchase in 2026 should be Windows 11. Existing Windows 10 machines should be assessed and scheduled for upgrade.

Domain controllers are off-limits

Patterson explicitly does not support running Eaglesoft on a domain controller. If your server doubles as the domain controller for your office network, that is a configuration worth reviewing with your dental IT provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Eaglesoft is slow. Is it a hardware problem?

Almost certainly at least in part. The most common causes of slow Eaglesoft performance are an underpowered server, a single hard drive without RAID, too little RAM, or workstations on wireless connections. These are all fixable at the hardware and network level, not the software level.

Can I run Eaglesoft on a virtual machine?

No. Patterson does not support Eaglesoft in virtual machine environments including Hyper-V and VMware. If you are running Eaglesoft in a VM and something breaks, Patterson support will not assist until the issue is reproduced on physical hardware.

How many workstations can I run on a standard server?

Patterson’s standard server specs cover offices with 9 or fewer Eaglesoft workstations. At 10 or more, you should be running a dedicated Windows Server OS with higher specifications. A dental IT provider can help you plan for growth before you hit that threshold.

Does Eaglesoft support Mac or cloud access?

No. Eaglesoft is a Windows-only, server-based application. It requires a dedicated Windows server on your local network. If you want cloud-based access or Mac compatibility, you would need to evaluate a different practice management platform.
