Open Dental is the most hardware-flexible of the major dental practice management platforms. It can run on a mid-range computer, supports cloud deployment, and works on Windows, Linux, or macOS for the server. Here are the official 2026 requirements straight from opendental.com, plus what they mean for your practice.

Open Dental is the most affordable to run on hardware
Because Open Dental uses MySQL and is lightweight by design, it does not require the same server horsepower as Dentrix or Eaglesoft. A mid-range machine purchased in the last few years will run it comfortably for most small to mid-size practices. That said, more RAM and SSD storage will always improve performance, especially as your database grows over time.
SSD is recommended and worth the upgrade
Open Dental does not require SSD, but it strongly recommends it. If your server is running traditional hard drives, an SSD upgrade is one of the fastest and most affordable performance wins available. As your patient database grows, faster storage means faster load times across every workstation.
The cloud option changes the hardware equation entirely
Open Dental Cloud removes the need for a local server. Your team accesses the software through a browser, and all data lives in Open Dental’s cloud infrastructure. For startup practices or offices that want to reduce on-site IT complexity, this is a strong option. The only on-site requirement is a reliable internet connection and the ODCloudClient installed on Windows machines for integrations like imaging software.
Virtual machines are supported
Unlike Dentrix and Eaglesoft, Open Dental explicitly supports running on a Windows Virtual Machine or Server. The caveat is performance: if other services are competing for resources on the same physical server, MySQL will run slower and Open Dental will feel it. Dedicated resources are always better.

Does Open Dental need a dedicated server?
Not always. For small offices, Open Dental can run on a workstation that also serves as the server, though a dedicated server is recommended to protect your data. For Open Dental Cloud, no on-site server is needed at all.
Can Open Dental run on a Mac?
The server can run on macOS. Workstations have more limited macOS support, so confirm with your IT provider before deploying across Mac workstations. For practices on mixed environments, Open Dental Cloud is often the cleaner option.
How much storage does Open Dental need?
Open Dental itself uses under 1 GB. The real storage consideration is your patient database and the A to Z folder where documents and images are stored. A practice with several years of imaging data can accumulate hundreds of gigabytes. Plan storage capacity based on your imaging volume, not just the software footprint.
What happens if we outgrow our current server?
Open Dental scales well. As your practice grows, the main levers are adding RAM, upgrading to faster SSD storage, and ensuring your network can handle the load. A dental IT provider can assess your current setup and build a growth plan before performance becomes a problem.
