3Shape TRIOS System Requirements in 2026

3Shape TRIOS system requirements for 2026 covering PC and network specifications for dental practices and IT providers.

3Shape TRIOS is the most widely adopted intraoral scanning system in dentistry. Unlike most dental software where any compliant workstation will do, 3Shape requires specific approved PC hardware for TRIOS scanner operation. Running a TRIOS scanner on a workstation not listed in 3Shape’s approved PC catalog means 3Shape cannot guarantee proper scanner function.

Here are the 2026 system requirements for 3Shape TRIOS based on the PC Catalog 25.1 and current 3Shape specifications.

The Most Important Hardware Compliance Requirement for TRIOS

3Shape explicitly states that proper TRIOS scanner operation cannot be guaranteed on PCs not listed in their approved PC catalog.

A practice that purchases a workstation based on general specs rather than 3Shape’s approved list risks scanner malfunctions that are not covered under warranty support. Always verify the specific PC against 3Shape’s current catalog before purchase.

3Shape TRIOS Workstation Requirements by Role

Select the workstation role to see the appropriate specifications. Scanning workstations have significantly higher requirements than non-scanning workstations.

Network Requirements

Wired connections Gigabit Ethernet

Required between the 3Shape Unite server and all client workstations. CBCT and scan files are large and slow network connections cause significant delays in file transfer and image loading.

Wireless connections 50 Mbps effective

Minimum effective upload and download speed between the wireless client and the Unite server. This is the effective throughput at the client, not the advertised router speed.

A typical TRIOS order of 30MB takes approximately 30 seconds to transfer on a standard connection. Practices with high scan volumes should ensure their network infrastructure can handle concurrent file transfers without impacting daily workflow. Wired connections to the Unite server are strongly preferred over wireless for scanning workstations.

TRIOS MOVE and TRIOS POD Configurations

TRIOS MOVE Mobile scanning unit with integrated computer

TRIOS MOVE is a mobile scanning unit that includes its own integrated computer. Most TRIOS MOVE+ units are compatible with Windows 11. First-generation TRIOS MOVE+ units (shipping since April 2019) require a Windows 11 upgrade. Second-generation TRIOS MOVE+ units (shipping since September 2023) come with Windows 11 pre-installed.

TRIOS POD External workstation connected via POD interface

TRIOS POD configurations use an external workstation connected to the scanner via the POD interface. The POD workstation must be selected from 3Shape’s approved PC list for proper scanner operation. The same approved PC catalog requirement applies as for integrated scanning workstations — a general-spec workstation is not sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for the scanning workstation. 3Shape requires specific approved PC hardware for TRIOS scanner operation and cannot guarantee proper function on non-approved PCs. For workstations running 3Shape software without directly operating the scanner, standard minimum specifications apply. Always verify against 3Shape’s current PC Catalog before purchase.
64GB RAM for an approved TRIOS scanning workstation. This is significantly higher than standard dental workstations and reflects the real-time processing demands of intraoral scan capture. Workstations running 3Shape software without operating the scanner require 16GB minimum.
3Shape Unite supports both standalone and client-server configurations. Multi-workstation practices typically use a Unite server to store and manage case data centrally. The Unite server has its own hardware requirements separate from client workstations. Your IT provider should size the server based on the number of simultaneous users and case volume.
3Shape cannot guarantee proper scanner operation on non-approved hardware. Scanner malfunctions, image capture failures, and performance problems are common outcomes. More importantly, support from 3Shape for issues on non-approved hardware is limited. Purchasing an approved workstation upfront is significantly less expensive than troubleshooting scanner problems after the fact.
Running a 3Shape TRIOS scanner and not sure if your workstation is on 3Shape’s approved PC catalog for 2026?

Ekim IT Solutions works exclusively with dental practices. We serve New England and New York with on-site support and dental practices nationwide with remote support. We verify your TRIOS workstation against 3Shape’s current approved PC catalog and source approved hardware when your setup does not meet the spec so your scanner performs the way it was built to.

An unapproved workstation running TRIOS is unsupported by 3Shape. Find out if yours is on the list before scanner problems start.
