Foundational Network Design

The first three principles determine how the network is planned and structured.

1. Start With a Network Plan

Before buying equipment, map operatories, imaging rooms, front desk, doctor’s offices, the server or network closet, printers, access points, cameras, VoIP phones, and guest Wi-Fi.

This determines how many network drops, switches, access points, and other components a practice actually needs.

2. Use Business-Grade Networking Equipment

A dental practice should have infrastructure designed for continuous business use: a firewall, managed switches, wired devices, and wireless access points.

The firewall handles security and traffic management, managed switches provide wired connectivity, and access points provide controlled wireless access.

3. Separate Clinical and Guest Traffic

Network segmentation is one of the most important design principles. Patient guest Wi-Fi should not sit on the same unrestricted network as patient records, imaging systems, servers, or administrative workstations.

4. Use Wired Connections for Critical Clinical Equipment

Wi-Fi is convenient, but convenience is not always the priority. For fixed clinical workstations, imaging equipment, servers, and other critical devices, wired Ethernet provides predictable connectivity.

Wireless should be designed, not simply added wherever the signal looks strong.

5. Design Wi-Fi Around the Building

Building materials, wall construction, layout, device density, and interference affect wireless coverage.

6. Don’t Put the Network Closet Wherever There Is Space
