How to Set Up Open Dental for a New Dental Practice

Opening a new dental practice gives you one clean chance to build the technology environment correctly before patient volume makes changes harder. Open Dental provides a Setup Wizard and a blank-database workflow for new offices, but a successful launch also depends on the network, imaging bridges, workstations, security, backups, and testing around the software.

Start With the Blank Database and Setup Wizard
For a new practice starting from scratch, Open Dental documents a blank-database workflow. Use the Setup Wizard to enter core practice information before loading real patient data. This is the right time to establish the practice structure instead of correcting it after opening.
Configure Providers, Employees, Operatories, and Fees
Build provider and employee records, operatories, schedules, fee schedules, clinics if applicable, and the other settings that drive daily workflow. Model the office you are actually opening, including hygiene and doctor columns, rather than relying on temporary placeholders.
Design the Network Before the Workstations Go Live
Open Dental publishes separate computer and network setup guidance and recommends professional networking help. Decide where the database, shared files, firewall, switches, wired drops, wireless access points, printers, and clinical computers will live before the office is finished.
Configure Imaging and Third-Party Bridges
Identify the imaging software, sensors, payment tools, clearinghouse, and other applications Open Dental must connect to. Test each bridge on the actual workstation that will use it. A bridge that launches correctly at the front desk may still fail in an operatory with a different path or local configuration.
Set Up Security and Backups Before PHI Arrives
Open Dental specifically tells new offices to address HIPAA issues before patient data is entered. Configure user access, permissions, endpoint security, network controls, backups, and recovery procedures before the database contains real patient information.
Test the Entire Patient Workflow
Run test patients through scheduling, charting, imaging, treatment planning, claims, payments, printing, and backup verification. The goal is not proving that Open Dental opens. The goal is proving the office can complete a normal patient visit without a technology bottleneck.
