Open Dental Hardware Requirements in 2026

Open Dental is the most hardware-flexible of the major dental practice management platforms. It can run on a mid-range computer, supports cloud deployment, and works on Windows, Linux, or macOS for the server. Here are the official 2026 requirements straight from opendental.com, plus what they mean for your practice.

01

Lower hardware costs

Runs on affordable mid-range hardware. Good fit for startup practices and offices looking to cut IT overhead.

02

Cloud option available

No local server needed. Just a browser and a fast internet connection. Ideal for practices that want to go server-free.

03

Flexible OS support

The server runs on Windows, Linux, or macOS. More deployment options than any other major dental PMS.

Server Requirements

SpecRequirement
ProcessorAny modern Intel or AMD processor (newer is faster)
RAM4 to 8 GB recommended; 1 GB absolute minimum
StorageSSD or NVMe recommended; any size works (Open Dental itself uses under 1 GB)
NetworkHigh-speed internet connection required
OSWindows 11, Windows Server 2016/2019/2022/2025, Linux, or macOS
Server nameKeep under 15 characters (Windows limitation)

Open Dental Cloud Requirements

SpecRequirement
Internet speed20 Mbps download minimum
On-site hardwareNo local server required

ODCloudClientRequired on Windows machines for third-party software integration
Open Dental Cloud removes the need for a local server entirely. The only on-site requirement is a reliable internet connection and the ODCloudClient on Windows machines for integrations like imaging software.
⚠️

Windows 10 is no longer supported by Open Dental as of October 14, 2025. Open Dental follows Microsoft’s support lifecycle. Any workstation still running Windows 10 should be assessed for upgrade to Windows 11 now.

As a certified Open Dental vendor partner, we set up and configure Open Dental server and workstation environments from scratch.

What These Specs Mean for Your Practice

Most affordable to run on hardware

Because Open Dental uses MySQL and is lightweight by design, it does not require the same server horsepower as Dentrix or Eaglesoft. A mid-range machine purchased in the last few years will run it comfortably for most small to mid-size practices.

SSD is recommended and worth the upgrade

Open Dental does not require SSD, but it strongly recommends it. If your server is running traditional hard drives, an SSD upgrade is one of the fastest and most affordable performance wins available.

The cloud option changes the hardware equation entirely

Open Dental Cloud removes the need for a local server. Your team accesses the software through a browser and all data lives in Open Dental’s cloud infrastructure. The only on-site requirement is a reliable internet connection.

Virtual machines are supported

Unlike Dentrix and Eaglesoft, Open Dental explicitly supports running on a Windows Virtual Machine or Server. The caveat is performance: if other services are competing for resources on the same physical server, MySQL will run slower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. For small offices, Open Dental can run on a workstation that also serves as the server, though a dedicated server is recommended to protect your data. For Open Dental Cloud, no on-site server is needed at all.
The server can run on macOS, but workstations have more limited support. Confirm with your IT provider before deploying across Mac workstations. For practices on mixed environments, Open Dental Cloud is often the cleaner option.
The software itself uses under 1 GB, but your imaging data is the real variable. A practice with several years of imaging data can accumulate hundreds of gigabytes. Plan storage capacity based on your imaging volume, not just the software footprint.
Open Dental scales well. As your practice grows, the main levers are adding RAM, upgrading to faster SSD storage, and ensuring your network can handle the load. A dental IT provider can assess your current setup and build a growth plan before performance becomes a problem.
