CEREC is one of the most widely used CAD/CAM systems in dentistry. Most people think of it as a scanner. In practice, it is an entire connected ecosystem of hardware, software, and now cloud services, all of which need to work together reliably during patient appointments.
When one piece of that ecosystem fails, same-day restorations stop. Understanding what the CEREC ecosystem involves and what your IT needs to support it is the first step to making sure that does not happen.

CEREC is developed by Dentsply Sirona. The full ecosystem includes several connected components that your IT infrastructure has to support simultaneously.
The CEREC scan unit, either the Primescan or legacy Omnicam, captures the digital impression. It connects to a dedicated CEREC cart or workstation via USB. The scanner requires a specific driver and is not compatible with just any workstation. Windows version, USB configuration, and installed software version all affect whether the scanner will initialize and capture images correctly.
CEREC Software is the design application where the dentist or staff member designs the restoration. It runs on a Windows workstation and requires specific hardware resources to render 3D models smoothly. Older workstations with insufficient RAM or outdated graphics cards will cause lag during design, which is particularly frustrating during a patient appointment.
The CEREC milling unit, such as the Primemill or MC X, connects to the design workstation and receives the restoration design via the local network or direct connection. The connection between the design workstation and the milling unit needs to be stable and fast. Network interruptions during milling can cause errors that require restarting the process.
Dentsply Sirona introduced DS Core as a cloud platform that connects CEREC to cloud-based design tools, remote collaboration, and cross-device workflows. DS Core requires reliable internet connectivity. Practices using DS Core features need a stable internet connection with adequate upload speed to transmit scan data to the cloud without delays.

Windows updates frequently reset driver configurations. After a major Windows update, the CEREC scanner may fail to initialize. This is one of the most common IT support calls from CEREC practices. Your IT provider should be aware that CEREC workstations require controlled update management to prevent driver conflicts.
If the CEREC Software takes a long time to load or render the 3D model, the workstation is likely underpowered for the current version of the software. Each software update from Dentsply Sirona tends to increase hardware requirements. Your IT provider should audit the CEREC workstation hardware whenever you update the software.
If the milling unit loses connection to the design workstation, it is almost always a network issue. Wireless connections are the most common cause. A wired Gigabit Ethernet connection between the CEREC workstation and the milling unit eliminates the majority of connectivity errors.
Practices using cloud features may encounter failed uploads or long transfer times. This typically indicates insufficient internet bandwidth or an unstable internet connection. Your IT provider should test upload speed specifically, since many internet plans prioritize download speed and offer much slower upload speeds that can limit cloud connectivity.
No. CEREC Software requires Windows Professional editions and specific hardware. Home editions are not supported. The workstation also needs adequate RAM and, for current software versions, a dedicated graphics card is strongly recommended. Your IT provider can audit your current hardware against CEREC requirements before a software update.
Dentsply Sirona recommends a dedicated workstation for CEREC. Running CEREC alongside other applications that compete for system resources can cause performance issues during design and slow rendering. In practices where a dedicated workstation is not possible, your IT provider can configure resource priorities to give CEREC priority when it is running.
Yes, but with a wired connection. CEREC requires fast, stable connectivity to the milling unit and, if using DS Core, to the internet. The workstation should be on a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection. Wireless is not recommended for any CEREC workstation.
