What Happens When Dentrix Ascend Loses Internet Connection

Dentrix Ascend cloud practice management internet outage troubleshooting and offline imaging for dental practices

Dentrix Ascend is a cloud-based practice management platform, so internet connectivity is part of the practice infrastructure. When the connection fails, the important question is which workflows require cloud access, which limited functions can continue offline, and how the team will work until connectivity returns.

Offline Imaging Is Not Offline Everything

Dentrix Ascend Imaging has a documented offline mode for acquiring images on PC and Mac, then synchronizing them after internet access returns.

What Stops When Internet Access Is Lost

Normal cloud access can be interrupted when the office cannot reach the internet. Staff should first determine whether the problem affects the entire office, one workstation, the local ISP, or the Dentrix Ascend service.

Offline Imaging Is the Important Exception

Dentrix Ascend documents an offline imaging mode that allows new images to be acquired while the internet is unavailable. The images are stored locally on that computer and synchronized with the online database after connectivity is restored.

Check the Vendor Status Before Rebuilding the Network

If other internet services work but Ascend does not, check Henry Schein One service status before changing firewall, browser, or workstation settings. If nothing in the office can reach the internet, investigate the local network or ISP first.

Build a Real Downtime Procedure

The office should know how to handle appointments, clinical documentation, patient communication, and image acquisition during an outage. Offline imaging is a contingency tool, not a complete offline replacement for the cloud PMS.

Use Backup Internet Where Downtime Is Expensive

A secondary business connection or properly designed cellular failover can reduce the impact of an ISP outage. The failover should be tested before the practice needs it, including whether critical wired and wireless devices actually route through the backup connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

The platform is cloud based and normal access requires connectivity. Dentrix Ascend Imaging has a specific offline acquisition mode, but the full PMS should not be treated as an offline application.
Dentrix Ascend Imaging supports offline image acquisition, with synchronization after the connection returns.
Dentrix Ascend documentation says offline images are stored on the computer used to capture them and must be recovered from that same computer.
For a cloud-dependent practice, redundant connectivity can materially reduce downtime, provided it is properly configured and tested.
