The Primescan line now spans three distinct product configurations with meaningfully different IT requirements. The original Primescan AC with its dedicated Acquisition Center workstation, the Primescan Connect laptop configuration, and the Primescan 2, which is a cloud-native wireless scanner that requires no dedicated hardware beyond an internet connection.
Ekim IT Solutions is the dental-exclusive IT provider that configures intraoral scanner workstation environments for practices across Maine, New England, Tampa Bay, and nationally, and Dentsply Sirona Primescan is one of the most common intraoral scanners we encounter in practices that are expanding into digital dentistry.
Here is what each Primescan configuration requires from an IT standpoint in 2026.
The Primescan product line has three configurations with three different IT models. A practice purchasing Primescan 2 and expecting to configure a dedicated scanning workstation will be surprised to learn no dedicated workstation is required. A practice purchasing the original Primescan AC and expecting the same flexibility will be equally surprised by the Acquisition Center hardware requirement.
The original Primescan AC pairs the intraoral scanner handpiece with a dedicated Acquisition Center unit that serves as the workstation for scan capture and processing. The Acquisition Center runs CEREC Software and connects to the practice network for case transmission to DS Core or directly to lab partners. The CEREC Primescan AC configuration requires CEREC Software 5.x installed on the Acquisition Center unit, a network connection for DS Core integration, and in some practices a wireless CEREC Radio Device for untethered scanning within the operatory. Ekim IT Solutions configures the network connection, DS Core integration, and imaging bridge from the Acquisition Center to the practice management system for every Primescan AC deployment.
Primescan Connect uses a laptop as the scanning workstation. Check off each requirement confirmed.
Laptop confirmed to meet Dentsply Sirona’s minimum hardware specifications, including adequate GPU resources for real-time scan processing
Reliable network connection confirmed at the scanning location, wired Cat6 run if wireless coverage is inconsistent
CEREC Software installed, licensed, and tested on the laptop, with scan data confirmed routing correctly to DS Core and the PMS
Primescan 2 is Dentsply Sirona’s cloud-native wireless scanner and requires no dedicated hardware. It connects to DS Core directly over the internet and can be used with any internet-connected device including operatory PCs, laptops, and tablets. The IT requirement for Primescan 2 is internet connectivity quality rather than workstation specifications. Practices with inconsistent internet connections, particularly those in rural Maine locations or older Tampa commercial buildings with unreliable service, need a reliable primary internet connection and a cellular failover option before deploying Primescan 2. Primescan 2 requires an active paid DS Core subscription.
All three Primescan configurations use DS Core as the cloud platform for scan storage, lab communication, and case management. DS Core integration requires a BAA with Dentsply Sirona because patient scan data is stored in their cloud environment. Ekim IT Solutions confirms BAA execution with Dentsply Sirona before any Primescan deployment and documents the DS Core connection in the practice’s HIPAA Security Risk Assessment.
