DEXIS can capture an X-ray normally while the Dentrix bridge is still broken. The failure often sits between the patient chart and the imaging software, not inside the sensor itself.
Start by checking the registry-based bridge configuration, the Dentrix Imaging Center settings, and the Windows components that allow Dentrix to launch DEXIS and associate the image with the correct patient.
Dentrix relies on Windows registry entries to find and launch DEXIS from inside a patient record.
If a Dentrix update overwrites those entries, or a DEXIS reinstall changes the executable path, the next acquisition attempt may fail without a warning. DEXIS may not open at all, or it may open without associating the image to the patient.
The bridge registry key tells Dentrix where the DEXIS executable is located and provides the communication settings used during image acquisition.
Find the Bridge Entry
On the affected workstation, inspect the DEXIS bridge entry stored under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the Windows Registry.
Match the Executable Path
Confirm the configured DEXIS path matches the actual installation location on that workstation.
Test From Dentrix
After correcting an outdated path or entry, launch DEXIS from within the Dentrix patient record and confirm the image associates correctly.
The affected workstation needs DEXIS selected as its imaging platform, with a configuration path that matches the actual DEXIS installation.
If the registry entry and Imaging Center configuration are correct, check version compatibility, Windows permissions, and the DEXIS background service.
DEXIS Version vs. Dentrix Version
After a major Dentrix update, an older DEXIS version may no longer be compatible with the updated bridge communication protocol.
Installation Directory Permissions
A Windows update or group policy change can restrict access to the DEXIS installation directory and prevent Dentrix from launching it.
DEXIS Imaging Suite Service
If the DEXIS service is stopped, bridge launch attempts from within Dentrix can fail silently until the service is restored.
Work through the four checkpoints that have to stay aligned for Dentrix to launch DEXIS and return the image to the correct patient record.
Mark each checkpoint as you verify it
Confirm the Windows registry entry points to the actual DEXIS executable on the affected workstation.
Verify DEXIS is selected as the active imaging platform and the configured path matches the installation.
Check DEXIS compatibility with the current Dentrix version and confirm Windows still allows access to the installation directory.
Confirm the DEXIS background service is running so Dentrix can complete the bridge launch.
