Open Dental is the most hardware-flexible of the major dental practice management platforms. It can run on a mid-range computer, supports cloud deployment, and works on Windows, Linux, or macOS for the server. Here are the official 2026 requirements straight from opendental.com, plus what they mean for your practice.
Lower hardware costs
Runs on affordable mid-range hardware. Good fit for startup practices and offices looking to cut IT overhead.
Cloud option available
No local server needed. Just a browser and a fast internet connection. Ideal for practices that want to go server-free.
Flexible OS support
The server runs on Windows, Linux, or macOS. More deployment options than any other major dental PMS.

Windows 10 is no longer supported by Open Dental as of October 14, 2025. Open Dental follows Microsoft’s support lifecycle. Any workstation still running Windows 10 should be assessed for upgrade to Windows 11 now.

As a certified Open Dental vendor partner, we set up and configure Open Dental server and workstation environments from scratch.
Most affordable to run on hardware
Because Open Dental uses MySQL and is lightweight by design, it does not require the same server horsepower as Dentrix or Eaglesoft. A mid-range machine purchased in the last few years will run it comfortably for most small to mid-size practices.
SSD is recommended and worth the upgrade
Open Dental does not require SSD, but it strongly recommends it. If your server is running traditional hard drives, an SSD upgrade is one of the fastest and most affordable performance wins available.
The cloud option changes the hardware equation entirely
Open Dental Cloud removes the need for a local server. Your team accesses the software through a browser and all data lives in Open Dental’s cloud infrastructure. The only on-site requirement is a reliable internet connection.
Virtual machines are supported
Unlike Dentrix and Eaglesoft, Open Dental explicitly supports running on a Windows Virtual Machine or Server. The caveat is performance: if other services are competing for resources on the same physical server, MySQL will run slower.
