Dentrix Ascend is the cloud-based version of Dentrix from Henry Schein One. Unlike traditional Dentrix, it does not require a local server. Your data lives in the cloud and your team accesses it through a browser from any device. That changes the hardware conversation significantly.
Here are the official 2026 system requirements from Henry Schein One, plus what they mean for your practice setup.
01
No local server
All data lives in Henry Schein One’s cloud. You eliminate the cost and maintenance of an on-premise server entirely.
02
Works on any device
Windows, Mac, and iPad all supported via Chrome or Safari. You are not locked into a specific operating system or device type.
03
SOC 2 Type II certified
The first dental PMS to earn this security certification, meaning Henry Schein One’s infrastructure has been independently audited for security controls.
50 Mbps minimum, assuming 10 users logged in simultaneously at one location. Larger practices or those using imaging inside Ascend should plan for more. 50 Mbps minimum
Upload speed
10 Mbps minimum.
Connection type
Stable broadband required. Consistent speed matters more than peak speed. Wired Ethernet at each workstation is strongly recommended over Wi-Fi.
With Dentrix Ascend, your internet connection carries every patient record, every image request, and every claim submission. It is now your most critical piece of infrastructure.
⚠️ Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Henry Schein One recommends Windows 11 for all Dentrix Ascend workstations.
While Dentrix Ascend still lists Windows 10 as technically supported, running on an end-of-life OS creates security gaps that put your HIPAA compliance at risk. Any dental IT provider managing your practice should be planning this upgrade now.
What These Specs Mean for Your Practice
Your internet connection is now your most critical piece of infrastructure
With Dentrix Ascend, the server is gone. Henry Schein One hosts everything. That means your internet connection carries every patient record, every image request, every claim submission. A 50 Mbps download connection is the minimum for a practice with 10 users active at once. Wired Ethernet at every workstation is still strongly recommended over Wi-Fi.
16 GB RAM on workstations makes a real difference
Dentrix Ascend runs in Chrome. Chrome is a memory-intensive application, especially with multiple tabs open. On workstations with 8 GB of RAM, you will notice slowdowns when staff members have Ascend open alongside imaging software, email, and other tabs. 16 GB is where the experience gets smooth and stays there.
Any modern computer works, including Macs and iPads
This is one of Dentrix Ascend’s biggest practical advantages over traditional Dentrix. A Mac at the front desk, a Windows PC in the back office, and an iPad for the dentist walking between operatories can all run Dentrix Ascend on the same account. You are not locked into a specific device type or operating system.
You still need IT support, just a different kind
No local server does not mean no IT needs. Your network infrastructure, workstation hardware, internet reliability, and endpoint security still require active management. HIPAA compliance does not disappear because your software is cloud-based. Dental IT providers who understand Ascend can help you maintain the right setup without the overhead of a traditional server environment.
Network assessment. Confirm your internet and wiring meet Ascend’s speed requirements before performance issues hit your front desk.
02
Workstation audits. Verify RAM, OS version, and Chrome configuration across every device in the practice.
03
Endpoint security. Antivirus, encryption, and access controls across all devices so your cloud-based setup stays HIPAA compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Dentrix Ascend requires an active internet connection to function. This is the main operational risk of cloud-based practice management software. A backup internet connection, such as a cellular failover device, is worth considering for practices that cannot afford downtime.
No. Henry Schein One is explicit that Dentrix Ascend is a completely separate application and cannot run in parallel with traditional Dentrix. Practices must fully migrate to Ascend rather than run both simultaneously.
Yes. Dentrix Ascend is SOC 2 Type II certified and includes built-in security features including encrypted backups, role-based access controls, and audit logging. However, HIPAA compliance also depends on how your practice manages devices, access, and network security on your end. Cloud software does not automatically make a practice compliant.
Henry Schein One provides data export options for practices that transition away from Ascend. Review the terms of your agreement carefully before signing up and confirm the export format is compatible with any system you might move to in the future.
