DEXIS Imaging Suite is one of the most widely used dental imaging platforms in North America. Over 150,000 DEXIS imaging devices are installed in practices across the world. If your practice runs DEXIS, your hardware has to keep up with it.
DEXIS does not publish a single public spec sheet the way some other platforms do. Their official position is that requirements vary depending on the version, the sensors in use, and the imaging workflow of each practice. For the most current official specs for your specific setup, contact DEXIS Technical Support directly at 1-888-883-3947.
What follows is what dental IT professionals consistently recommend based on real-world DEXIS installations and the general requirements documented across versions of the Imaging Suite.

DEXIS Imaging Suite manages 2D X-rays, clinical photos, and connects with intraoral cameras and sensors across the practice. It integrates directly with major practice management systems including Dentrix, Eaglesoft, and Open Dental through the DEXintegrator module.
The software runs as a server-client system. One computer on the network acts as the DEXIS server, storing the image database and serving images to workstations throughout the practice. Each operatory workstation connects to the server to acquire and view images.
This architecture means both the server and the workstations need to meet hardware standards. A slow server affects every operatory. An underpowered workstation affects that chair.
Server Requirements
The DEXIS server is the central machine storing your image database. Image files are large. Over years of practice, the storage requirement grows significantly. The server needs enough power to serve images quickly to multiple workstations simultaneously.
| Component | Requirement |
| Operating System | Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional (64-bit). Home editions are not supported. |
| Processor | Intel Core i5 or i7, current generation recommended. Multi-core processing improves performance with simultaneous workstation connections. |
| RAM | 16GB minimum. 32GB recommended for practices with high image volume or multiple simultaneous users. |
| Storage | SSD strongly recommended for the operating system and DEXIS application. Separate high-capacity HDD or NAS for image storage. Image databases grow over time and require dedicated storage planning. |
| Network | Gigabit Ethernet (1Gbps wired). Wireless connections to the server are not supported and will cause performance issues. |
| USB | USB 3.0 ports required for sensor compatibility. |
Each operatory workstation that acquires or views images needs to meet these specifications. A workstation running only practice management software has different requirements than one actively capturing X-rays.
| Component | Requirement |
| Operating System | Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional (64-bit). |
| Processor | Intel Core i5, 8th generation or newer recommended. |
| RAM | 8GB minimum. 16GB recommended for workstations actively capturing images. |
| Graphics | Dedicated graphics card recommended for workstations used for image review and diagnosis. Integrated graphics can work for basic use. |
| Monitor | LCD monitor running at native resolution. DEXIS specifies that monitors must run at native resolution for accurate image display. |
| USB | USB 3.0 ports required. Sensor cable length matters for USB sensors, DEXIS Platinum Sensor supports cable extenders up to 15 feet. |
| Network | Wired Gigabit Ethernet connection to the server. Wireless will cause image transfer delays. |

DEXIS integrates with Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, and other major practice management platforms through the DEXintegrator module. This integration allows images to be accessed directly from the patient chart in your PMS without switching applications.
The integration requires both DEXIS and your PMS to be running on compatible versions. When your practice management software updates, your IT provider needs to verify that the DEXIS integration remains compatible. Skipping PMS updates without checking DEXIS compatibility first is a common cause of integration failures.
Dental imaging data is large and grows continuously. A single full-mouth series produces multiple high-resolution images. Panoramic and 3D images are significantly larger. Over years of practice, the DEXIS image database can reach hundreds of gigabytes.
Your IT provider needs to plan storage capacity not just for today but for the next three to five years. This means either starting with sufficient storage or having a clear expansion plan. It also means that your backup system must capture the entire image database, not just the application files.
A backup that covers the DEXIS database file but misses the image folder is not a real backup. This is one of the most common IT mistakes in dental offices running imaging software.
Does DEXIS run on Mac?
DEXIS Imaging Suite is a Windows-only application. It requires Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional. Mac workstations cannot run DEXIS natively.
Can DEXIS run on a virtual machine?
DEXIS does not officially support virtual machine installations. Running DEXIS in a VM can cause sensor recognition issues and is not recommended for production environments.
What happens if my DEXIS server goes down?
If the DEXIS server is unavailable, workstations lose access to the image database. No images can be acquired or viewed until the server is restored. This is why server reliability, regular maintenance, and tested backups are critical for practices running DEXIS.
How do I know if my current hardware meets DEXIS requirements?
Your IT provider can run a hardware assessment against the current DEXIS specifications for your version. Ekim IT Solutions conducts hardware assessments for dental practices as part of onboarding and at regular intervals. Contact us or reach DEXIS Technical Support directly at 1-888-883-3947 for version-specific requirements.
Ekim IT Solutions works exclusively with dental practices. We serve New England and New York with on-site support and dental practices nationwide with remote support. Security, compliance, and everything in between so you can focus on patients.
