Every X-ray your practice takes runs through DEXIS. When the hardware behind it is underpowered, your imaging slows down, your sensors disconnect mid-appointment, and your workflow stops. This guide covers exactly what your server and workstations need to keep DEXIS running without issues and what happens when they fall short.

DEXIS is one of the most widely deployed dental imaging platforms in North America.
If your practice runs DEXIS, your hardware has to keep up with it. DEXIS does not publish a single public spec sheet. Requirements vary by version, sensors, and workflow. Contact DEXIS Technical Support at 1-888-883-3947 for your specific setup.
⚠️ Running DEXIS on underpowered hardware is the leading cause of slow image capture and software crashes in dental offices.
Imaging software is resource-intensive. A workstation that meets minimum specs will struggle. A workstation built to recommended specs will run without issues.
DEXIS Imaging Suite: What the Software Does
Manages all dental imaging
DEXIS handles 2D X-rays, clinical photos, and connects with intraoral cameras and sensors across the practice. All imaging data is stored and accessed from a central database.
Server-client architecture
One computer on the network acts as the DEXIS server, storing the image database. Every operatory workstation connects to that server to acquire and view images. A slow server affects every chair.
Integrates with your PMS
DEXIS connects to Dentrix, Eaglesoft, and Open Dental through the DEXintegrator module, allowing images to be accessed directly from the patient chart without switching applications.
Server Requirements
The DEXIS server is the central machine storing your image database. Image files are large and the storage requirement grows significantly over years of practice. The server needs enough power to serve images quickly to multiple workstations simultaneously.
Component
Requirement
Operating System
Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional (64-bit). Home editions are not supported. Pro edition required
Processor
Intel Core i5 or i7, current generation recommended. Multi-core processing improves performance with simultaneous workstation connections.
RAM
16GB minimum. 32GB recommended for practices with high image volume or multiple simultaneous users. 32GB recommended
Storage
SSD strongly recommended for the operating system and DEXIS application. Separate high-capacity HDD or NAS for image storage. Image databases grow over time and require dedicated storage planning. Plan for 3-5 year growth
Network
Gigabit Ethernet (1Gbps wired). Wireless connections to the server are not supported and will cause performance issues. Wired only
USB
USB 3.0 ports required for sensor compatibility.
Workstation Requirements
Each operatory workstation that acquires or views images needs to meet these specifications. A workstation running only practice management software has different requirements than one actively capturing X-rays.
Component
Requirement
Operating System
Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional (64-bit). Pro edition required
Processor
Intel Core i5, 8th generation or newer recommended.
Dedicated graphics card recommended for workstations used for image review and diagnosis. Integrated graphics can work for basic use.
Monitor
LCD monitor running at native resolution. DEXIS specifies that monitors must run at native resolution for accurate image display. Native resolution required
USB
USB 3.0 ports required. Sensor cable length matters for USB sensors. DEXIS Platinum Sensor supports cable extenders up to 15 feet.
Network
Wired Gigabit Ethernet connection to the server. Wireless will cause image transfer delays. Wired only

DEXIS connects to Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental, and other major platforms through the DEXintegrator module, allowing images to be accessed directly from the patient chart.
Version compatibility matters. When your PMS updates, your IT provider needs to verify that the DEXIS integration remains compatible. Skipping PMS updates without checking DEXIS compatibility first is a common cause of integration failures.
Storage
Storage Planning for DEXIS
Dental imaging data is large and grows continuously. A single full-mouth series produces multiple high-resolution images. Panoramic and 3D images are significantly larger. Over years of practice, the DEXIS image database can reach hundreds of gigabytes.
Your backup must capture the image folder. A backup that covers the DEXIS database file but misses the image folder is not a real backup. This is one of the most common IT mistakes in dental offices running imaging software.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. DEXIS Imaging Suite is a Windows-only application. It requires Windows 10 Professional or Windows 11 Professional. Mac workstations cannot run DEXIS natively.
Not officially supported. Running DEXIS in a VM can cause sensor recognition issues and is not recommended for production environments.
Every workstation loses access to the image database. No images can be acquired or viewed until the server is restored. This is why server reliability, regular maintenance, and tested backups are critical for practices running DEXIS.
Your IT provider can run a hardware assessment against current DEXIS specs.Ekim IT Solutions conducts hardware assessments for dental practices as part of onboarding and at regular intervals. You can also reach DEXIS Technical Support directly at 1-888-883-3947 for version-specific requirements.
Is your dental practice running the right hardware?
Ekim IT Solutions works exclusively with dental practices. We serve New England and New York with on-site support and dental practices nationwide with remote support. Security, compliance, and everything in between so you can focus on patients.
Your DEXIS setup is only as reliable as the hardware behind it. We assess, spec, and support dental imaging infrastructure.
